Historic Alexandra is located in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range 130 kilometres north east of Melbourne. It houses Murrindindi's civic centre and is a town rich in parklands.
The first white men to see Alexandra were Hume and Novell in 1824. Gold mining and the heavily timbered fertile soils surrounding the Upper Goulburn River provided the initial attraction for settlers.
FINE BUILDINGS
Alexandra's fine historical buildings still stand as testimony to the town's prosperous past. They include the Shire Hall (1882) - described at the time of its completion, as "a magnificent building...the best outside Melbourne".
The post office, former courthouse, shire hall and hotels are also indicative of this period.
GREEN BELT
A green belt of parks flow through the township along the banks of the Ultima Thule Creek. The Shire gardens in Perkins Street are beautiful all year round.
Crossing the footbridge over U.T. Creek takes you into the vast Leckie Park which features a war memorial, various sporting clubs and community facilities and the quaint and historic Dove Cottage, a former miner's cottage.
Follow the creek across Grant Street to Rotary Park with its swing bridge over U.T. Creek, undercover coin-operated barbecue and picnic facilities and Visitor Information Centre.
SPEEDWAY
Lighting towers have only recently been constructed at the Alexandra Speedway track and night meetings are now serious events.
Sprint cars have become a feature of the program, joining the annual 69 lap racing calendar and crash and bash demolitions.
Alexandra Speedway is a natural ampitheatre
with ideal spectator vantage points. It is fully serviced and building an ever stronger reputation on the dirt track racing calendar.
SPORTING FACILITIES
Alexandra offers a wide variety of sporting and recreational facilities including racing and golf clubs, lawn tennis courts, synthetic bowling greens, seasonal swimming pool and a community centre boasting a netball/ basketball court, squash courts, gym and spa.
MCKENZIES RESERVE
Discover many fascinating interactions between plants and animals or some of their specialised adaptations to the environment by exploring this remnant bushland haven on the fringe of the Alexandra township.
WALKS
Information on a variety of scenic walks and drives around the Alexandra district are available from the Visitor Information Centre.
DISTRICT HUB
Short journeys to the neighbouring towns of Yarck and Taggerty expand the range of cafes and antiques on offer around Alexandra.More scenic drives to areas like Highlands and Terip Terip reveal the history and beauty of this picturesque region.
TIMBER TRAMWAY AND MUSEUM
The Alexandra Timber Tramway and Museum offers visitors a glimpse of the forest history of Alexandra and the surrounding Rubicon Ranges.The Museum is situated in Station Street, Alexandra and is open on the second Sunday of each month from September to May . It runs a steam, petrol and diesel locomotives on a 600 metre loop. Refreshments, a sausage sizzle lunch or undercover barbecues are all available.
THE ODD JUG AND ROSEHILL PLANT NURSERY
This very unique collection of over 1,000 jugs plus memorabilia is on display, which is a must to see. Devonshire Teas are served in a relaxing country garden and visitors may browse through the plant nursery. We cater for individuals to large bus groups.
